As a photographer, I am driven by a passion for capturing the essence of the natural world. My work is a reflection of my fascination with the intricate patterns, subtle play of light, and emotional resonance that can be found in the world around us.

My Creative Journey

My journey as a photographer began at an early age. I was always toying around with film cameras. In the summer of my senior year in high school, I remember vividly being in my uncle’s house and seeing a 35mm camera on his bookshelf. I asked to borrow it, and he looked at me like I was crazy. On another visit, as the camera was gathering dust, I asked again and made my case as to why he should let me borrow it. I won the debate, and the Nikon FM  opened my eyes to the world of photography. It was a fully manual camera. Every setting:  focus, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, etc., had to be set to compose a single image. It was a great way to learn the basics of photography.

I loved photographing in color, black and white, and Kodachrome. In 2002, I moved into the Canon family of cameras and purchased a point and shoot G4.  From the G4, I spent time with a Canon Rebel.  After the Rebel, I purchased a Canon D6. While using the D6 for a few years, I acquired a full set of lenses to complement the camera. That’s where the fun really began. In 2016, I bought my first Sony (mirrorless), the A7R3. I added another body, the Sony A7R4 and acquired a full stable of lenses along the way. The Sony’s are my current cameras that most of the photos on this site were taken with.

Through the years, I have found I love many genres of photography. Landscape, nature, wildlife, people, model/performance, street photography are all favorite subjects of mine. Every genre presents its own challenges and keeps me constantly learning, observing and growing as a photographer.

Through my lens, I seek to distill the essence of this beauty, crafting images that invite the viewer to slow down, reflect, and connect with the world.

The Inspiration Behind Volantys

Many people have asked me, “What is Volantys?” Back in the 90’s I was creating a yahoo.com email address. It seemed every combination of my first and last name was taken. After many attempts and frustration, I looked to the night sky -specifically the 72 constellations. I knew I would find one that wasn’t taken on the yahoo platform. I found the constellation, “Volans” or the flying fish. I instantly took a liking to it. At the time, I was selling aquarium products and tropical fish was my world for a while. It was fitting. No numbers, dashes or underscores were needed for the email address, Volantys, became my identity.

Volantys - its roots and meaning, "flying" or "moving with the wind," the name embodies the freedom, movement, and wonder that defines my photography. With each new photograph, I strive to capture the essence of this movement and freeze it. Whether it be mastering the light in my landscapes to capturing those subtle emotions of the human condition,  these are drivers that have created an infinite amount of passion and exhilaration whenever I get behind a camera.

Fun Facts

Go-To Subject

Sunrises are my favorite—the sun is never late and always in time, reminding me to be punctual, organized, and alert. Their endless colors and patterns never get old. To catch a great sunrise, you have to be out early; I often joke that out of 20 shoots, only 2 or 3 are truly spectacular.

My Go-To Camera

My go-to cameras are the Sony A7R III (42 MP) and A7R IV (61 MP). I use the R4 for images that need cropping or large prints. Don’t overlook your smartphone—my iPhone 16 Pro Max is great for time lapses and quick shots when traveling or in a pinch.

My Go-To Lense

I have a great selection of Sony and third-party lenses. My favorite is the Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8—lightweight, travel-friendly, and sharp with a versatile zoom. I also love the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 Art for portraits; it captures stunning detail and creates beautiful background blur at f/1.4.

Go-To Location

Camp Cronin is my top spot—an oceanfront with stunning views of the Atlantic, the Point Judith Lighthouse, Block Island, and the Rhode Island coastline. It’s one of the few places in the state that offers breathtaking sunrises and sunsets, with dramatic seascapes featuring the sun, moon, waves, wildlife, and people.

Dramatic black and white panoramic seascape with silhouetted rocks and lighthouse against stormy cloudy sky.
